Through this choice, the INSEAD Innovator Prize Selection Committee wants to highlight the leading role that Pattie Maes has played and is playing in the artificial intelligence innovations that define our society of today and tomorrow:
- Her background in artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction led to ground-breaking research and results in cognitive augmentation, or how immersive and wearable systems can actively assist people with memory, learning, decision making, communication and health
- In 1990, she founded the Software Agents Group at MIT, whose software applications – called intelligent agents – fundamentally changed the way e-commerce companies compete by learning from their users
- Her current work at MIT’s Media Laboratory, where she leads the acclaimed Fluid Interfaces Research Group, radically reinvents the human-machine experience
- She continues to be recognized as one of the key influencers in her field, with multiple accolades and TED talks that feature among the most-watched talks ever
- In addition to her academic endeavors, she has been an serial entrepreneur as co-founder of several venture-backed companies, including Firefly Networks (sold to Microsoft), Open Ratings (sold to Dun & Bradstreet) and Tulip Co (privately held)
